Driven to distraction: Keeping your eyes (and mind) on the road.
Saturday, September 25th, 2010
The phone rings, the baby cries, the text message pings. A lot of people complain about the amount of daily concentration-sapping intrusion they experience at home and work. Now combine that with being behind the wheel of a two-ton bullet traveling 60-miles-an-hour and it’s easy to understand why there has been so much media coverage about distracted driving lately. Despite the fact that traffic fatalities are the lowest they’ve been since 1950, people obviously aren’t getting the message.
There are a lot of culprits distracting drivers – eating and drinking, drowsiness, the radio, kids in the backseat, putting on make-up, even brushing teeth. But cell phones seem to be particularly culpable. It seems common sense, so why do so many people still use the phone and text while driving when research shows just how big a risk such behavior poses? Especially teens and younger people?
